Linda Vista Hospital
One of the most amazing paranormal experiences I have experienced was at the (former) Linda Vista Hospital located in Los Angeles, California. Originally called the Santa Fe Railroad Hospital, it opened in 1904 to great fanfare. In 1989 it was renamed the Linda Vista Hospital.
By the 1970's, the hospital started to decline as the railroad hospital association started to decline. The surrounding area of the hospital was also becoming less affluential and by 1980 the Santa Fe Railroad sold the hospital to healthcare company. From there, things only seemed to go down hill for the hospital as the reduce in operational expenses seemed to lead to more facility death rates. The hospital was also seeing an increase in gunshot and stabbing wounds coming in from the local neighborhoods. The lack of healthcare from most of the patients also lead the hospital to close it's emergency services. Finally, in 1991, the Linda Vista Hospital checked out it's last patient.
Since it's closing, it has been highly used by the film and television industry. Films and TV shows such as Outbreak, Pearl Harbor, Dexter and Criminal Minds have all shot in the former hospital. Other then being popular for the film industry, it has also become highly popular for it's reports of paranormal activity.
Closed off to the general public, I was very lucky to do a two hour investigation of the facility a couple of years ago as my husband's friend was filming there and had acquired a permit. I had full access to the former surgery areas where no one else was at. It was completely dark and I was equipped with an industrial flashlight (although this would provide little use). My husband joined me in my walk around the area.
We were met with strange smells, and sounds. Soon into our walk around, both of our flashlights (industrial Sure Fire's) both lost power at the same time. As we stood in the darkness, we started to hear what sounded like someone walking back and forth in one of the former surgery rooms. We also heard what sounded like the movement of various metal objects. Surgical instruments perhaps?
At one point, my husband called out, "Hello?" The movement of the metal objects stopped, and we both saw a shadow figure peak out from the room, and then go back in where the movement continued. Within a minute of that, suddenly all sounds stopped, and my husband and I both commented on how much "lighter" the air felt in the area.
It was certainly a unique experience, and one I will never forget. Since the time of my visit to the former hospital, and the time of this writing, the building has been converted into apartments. Although it is good to see that the building is being used again, it is a shame for future paranormal enthusiasts.
Have any of you had the chance to visit the former hospital? Are there any local hospitals in your areas?
