The House that Ghosts Built - The Winchester Mystery House

One of the most famous houses in America, is the Winchester Mystery House located in San Jose, California. Once owned by Sarah Winchester, it was believed to be haunted by the thousands of people who had been killed by the Winchester Rifle. When a psychic/medium told Sarah that the only way to appease the dead was to build them a home, construction on the mansion started in 1884, and is reported to have never ceased until Sarah's death in 1922.

The house contains around 161 rooms including 40 bedrooms. However, new areas of the house are continually being found. Since Sarah did not use an architect, the house is put together rather haphazardly. There are stairways that lead to nowhere and doors that open to courtyards below. Believed to be haunted even while Sarah was alive, ghostly reports continue to this day.

Reports of hearing work tools being used, as though the construction workers continue their job even in the after life, strange noises and shadow figures, as well as people claiming to see Sarah herself. Some feel that the house has never been haunted, but one must visit the house in order to determine if it is or not.

Several years ago, my husband and I decided to take a trip to Northern California to visit the famous house. There were no night tours offered that day, but we did manage to get in on the very last tour of the day. Our group was small, and our tour guide was excellent. We did not experience anything to note worthy, except at one point, as our group moved forward, my husband and I lagged slightly behind. At that point I did hear what sounded like men whispering to each other. I thought it was my husband saying something, but when I asked him what he said, he told me he had not said anything. I know it was not anyone in our group, because I could hear the tour guide clearly, and the whispering did not come from the same location as the group. Could this have been some former workers?

Whether or not the Winchester House is actually haunted or not, one may never know. Regardless, it can not be denied at what a marvel it truly is. Have any of you been to the Winchester House? Did you have any experiences? Let me know!
