The Most Haunted Hotel in Texas - the Menger Hotel
I love to travel and visit new places, especially if they hold a lot of historical importance....and possibly contain a ghost or two. The Menger Hotel opened in 1859 and sits in Alamo Plaza; the very land where the Battle of the Alamo took place in San Antonio, Texas. It also saw the events of the American Civil War take place, and the era of Reconstruction. It has been visited by many an important historical figures including Presidents Grant, Roosevelt and Nixon. Military figures such as Robert E. Lee have also stayed at the Menger. With so much history, including that of war, no wonder the Menger claims the title of "The Most Haunted Hotel in Texas."
War, fire, robberies...just a few of the events that the Menger witnessed throughout her history. It should come as no surprise that this historic hotel is home to several spirits. One such spirit is that of President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt was a big fan of the Menger, and famously recruited his Rough Riders in the Menger Bar. It is in this bar that Roosevelt's spirit continues to hang out to this day.
Another well known spirit of the Menger is that of a chambermaid, Sallie White. Sallie was sadly killed by her jealous husband in 1876 and her ghost is said to still frequent the hotel, especially the third floor where she lost her life.
About two years ago, I had the opportunity to stay in the Menger Hotel for an evening. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful hotels I've seen, both inside and out. My husband and I got a couple of drinks at the Menger Bar and you couldn't help but feel the history of the place. It was easy to see why Roosevelt continues to enjoy and frequent the location. During the evening, nothing of great paranormal significance happened besides the occasional odd sound. I do hope to one day be able to stay for a longer visit and do better investigation work.
Should you ever visit the San Antonio area, I would highly recommend staying at the Menger Hotel. Even if sleeping with ghosts isn't your thing, this hotel is stock full of history is right across the street from the Alamo. The staff is friendly, and the hotel is amazingly beautiful.
